Grand Teton Nationl Park~teenage musings

Our stop at the Grand Teton National Park provided one of the most stunning sites I have ever seen.

BISON

On our DSCN0345 way there, we happened upon an entire field of Bison, they were far away and hard to see but it was pretty amazing!  Get your National Geographic about the Bison in Wyoming here!

Grand Teton Mountain Range!

I was able to capture a photo of the most beautiful mountains I have ever seen!  The Grand Teton Mountain Range!  Here is a beautiful Panorama on sale at Amazon!

VISITOR CENTER

We proceeded to the visitor center where I bought many postcards to share with my family and friends. We then walked on a trail by the river that led to an old historical house and many other historical buildings. Among the buildings in the small village there was a small store. It was one of the original buildings in the area. The workers were very kind and knowledgeable. They answered our many questions, (there are 4 kids, lots of questions ensue with 4 kids!) Most everything in this quaint store was made in America, (Just like this shirt!) many made near the Grand Teton area. We ended up leaving with a handmade Jacobs Ladder toy!  Get your own made in America Jacobs Ladder here!  We also purchase a handmade sponge. (for washing dishes—since we forgot to bring one on our trip!)

PARK RANGER

We headed OVER AND  joined in on a Ranger guided tour, (my brothers were part of the Junior Ranger Program all summer! You can find more information here!

Overall, everything in this area is stunning. The workers were wonderfully kind and the historical part of the place was very interesting. The sights were breathtaking and I hope to return again someday!

~Moms says there are 6 visitor centers for this National Park! Check them out and find one closest to your hotel or campground, they all have lots of fun things to do!

Thermopolis, Wyoming: Perspective of a teenage girl!

IMG_74271Thermopolis, Wyoming Dinosaur Dig Site!

<<<<actual bones found at this location!!! SO SO cool!

First, we started our day late because mom was not feeling well.  This dinosaur museum was about a three hour drive from our campsite in Dubois, Wyoming to Thermopolis! I fell asleep on this drive.

BUS TOUR

Kids and adults alike hopped right on the bus and headed up the ROUGH mountain road to the dig site. Our guide told us all about the many types of bones they found and what type of land, which layer of the earth the bones were found in.   All in the tour asked many questions and looked at all the bones we could see at the S.I. site! (this stands for Something Interesting) Continuing on to another site nearby called Near Something Interesting or something funny like that! The tour guide spoke about how all the bones in this site are lined up in the proper order, as in full size dinosaurs died here.

LONG NECK DINOSAUR

Next, our family saw the current long neck dinosaur they are in the process of digging up. Explanations for the silly naming of the dig sites is given on the tour. This is something you will have to just visit to find out by yourselves!  She explained how they have people just like us and volunteer Paleontologists come out every summer to help dig as well. It took awhile for her to explain how they transport the bones, it was so interesting!  You will have to go on the tour to find out for yourself!

PHOTOS AT THE DIG SITES!

Photos of the dig site?  Sorry!

So sorry! Be prepared with Dramamine, (Here is the one for kids, moms likes it best!) if needed road was bumpy and it was so hot!  Our batteries in our phone cameras were dying and I left my camera at the campground this day!  Had to take photos inside only after we charged them up a bit.

As an option to see this site, here is a link for photos of the DIG SITE!

MUSEUM

Lastly, the museum was so interesting.  Plans are in the works for a new HUGE building to be opened in the next year or so. You will find the entire skeleton of the dinosaur dug up at the “SI” site is located inside! May want to plan a full day, we only had a half day and could have spent more time enjoying this museum.

Plan at least an hour in the current museum.  We only had 45 minutes in the museum and then they had to close, so we headed to dinner. A nice yummy Thai place in the small town! Highly recommended! Click on the photo to LIKE their Facebook page and stop in if you ever get a chance!  IMG_74321

Thermopolis is home to one of the largest Hot Springs in the area I have heard!  Find out more about Hot Springs State Park link here!

Dinosaur National Park: Vernal, Utah: Teen Girl Musings

March 10, 2017 by tillywee Leave a Comment

Dinosaur National Park ~ Teen girl musingsDSCN0308 DSCN0311 DSCN0312

When at Dinosaur National Park I was one of the more skeptical ones when it came to “Exciting place to visit!” However, in the long run, it was quite enjoyable. Grandparents drove up from Denver to go with us too! When we first arrived, I was NOT impressed with the heat. However, the view from the canyons and the river made me forget the heat instantly!

Views Were AMAZING!DSCN0331

See if  you notice when you go to visit!  The bridge at the entrance of the visitor center was made from what?   Find out when you arrive!  It is pretty interesting!

Visitor Center

We we walked inside, the drawing of the dinosaurs on the wall drew my attention!   My particular favorite was of a long neck dinosaur that said, “This is Dave, Dave likes plants.” Then, there was the name and age of the artist on the page.  (This is the only Dave the dinosaur I found on Amazon…itsDSCN0293 for your pet!) Many children can draw a dinosaur and leave it here on this display wall!

After I got over the excitement of “Dave,” we moved on.

Next, we took a bus trip!  They dropped us off at OLD DIG SITE

which now has a building built around it for its protection and preservation. I must say I was very surprised as I had never seen anything like this before!

DSCN0306

I was startled at how interested I became at that moment. ( teenage girls don’t tend to get interested in Dinosaur bones do they?!?!)  Dinosaur things for girls can be found here!  Check it out! This is SO cute!

The whole entire side of the mountain was covered in dinosaur bones! To see that many dinosaur bones in one place was truly amazing! Park rangers(here is a book with REAL park ranger stories!) discuss the bones and how they were discovered and how they have been preserved.  This was one of my favorite things. (So, when you get to go, listen to the rangers, they are very interesting!)DSCN0300 DSCN0301 DSCN0308 DSCN0307

Petroglyphs

After we finished up at the dinosaur bones, we drove around to find the Petroglyphs. (Here is a link to an inexpensive field guide to those amazing drawings!) Those drawings peaked my interest as well and the overall Historical value of the Dinosaur National Park was the best part for me!  I hope you can go someday too! DSCN032607
