Spending an afternoon on The Strand in Galveston is one of my favorite things to do while visiting there. I do feel like this is a great place for shopping but I choose not to take my children in order to stay within budget for our trip. I have shopped here on a previous visit and found it to be very enjoyable.
Galveston: Tall Ship Elissa and Harbor Tour and the Texas Seaport Museum
We recently had a GREAT time visiting in Galveston, Texas. We were able to go in mid-October and the water was still quite warm for swimming! The weather was perfect to enjoy all the outdoor activities on the island. I highly recommend you plan a trip in the Fall or late Spring before the crowds arrive.
There are quite a few fun and educational activities to do on the island. I will highlight a few of our favorite activities and recommend a few others we have just not had time to do yet.
While the Seawall side of the island is a lot of fun with Pleasure Pier and a warm sandy beach, don’t forget to plan a visit to the harbor side of the island.
If you head to Pier 21/22 at Harborside Drive, you will find the Tall Ship Elissa, the Harbor Tours, and the Texas Seaport Museum! There are also some very tasty and nice restaurants in the area. The Strand is just a short walk away as well. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting and participating in all these wonderful educational and fun activities!
Our Harbor Tour boat ride was a highlight of our visit. Captain Wes and Junior helped to make the tour very entertaining as well as educational. We were able to see quite a few dolphins on the tour as well…however, as Captain Wes pointed out, catching them on camera proved to be very difficult! (hint…look behind the shrimp boats!)
Check out their special Haunted Harbor Tours in October!

An interesting note regarding the Tall Ship Elissa, all three of the Spanish Ships that sailed to the America’s could fit inside the Tall Ship Elissa! Imagine traveling SO far in such a small ship!
